Our Instructors

Our venue for 2008: St. Michael's College, Colchester, Vermont

For 2008, our instructional staff consists of a stellar group of experienced and caring instructors:

Barb Balch Director Barb is the co-founder of the Vermont Chess Camp and served for eleven years as a Camp Counselor. Barb is dedicated to ensuring that each camper has a quality experience -- and some fun as well!
Matt Noble Tournaments Director and Chief Instructor Matt is a National Master, and the 2002 National Game 60 Champion. A caring and compassionate teacher, Matt creates a learning environment for each camper that incorporates challenge, promotes improvement, nd allows for laughter. Matt is in his eleventh year with Vermont Chess Camp.
Allyn Kahn Chess Instructor Allyn is a Mathematics Teacher and a USCF Class A player. He loves the game of kings and shares that love with all of his students. Allyn has been with Vermont Chess Camp for six years.
Robert Clawson Chess Instructor Bob is a veteran teacher and chess coach. In addition to regular instructional time, Bob can be found at any free minute poised over a board, offering a camper an impromptu opportunity to improve their game. Bob has been with Vermont Chess Camp for six years
Tyler Hartshorn Chess Instructor Tyler is an enthusiastic chess teacher and coach. A former Vermont Chess Camper, Tyler has developed both his passion for chess and excellence as an instructor with great success. Tyler is now in his fourth year with Vermont Chess Camp.
Stevie and Chris Balch Chess Camp Coordinators Siblings Stevie and Chris have helped support and promote the Vermont Chess Camp since its early days.
Dennis Bathory-Kitsz Chess Camp Documentarian Stevie's husband Dennis is a composer, now beginning his third year as Vermont Chess Camp documentarian. His photos and videos appear throughout this website.
